Set in Chicago when Prohibition has everyone thirsty for a little excitement, Some Like it Hot is the “glorious, big, high-kicking” (Associated Press) story of two musicians forced to flee the Windy City after witnessing a mob hit. With gangsters hot on their heels, they catch a cross-country train for the life-chasing, life-changing trip of a lifetime.

The musical is based on the classic MGM film of the same name, which has been named the “funniest movie of all time” by the American Film Institute. For the show’s writers, Matthew López (The Inheritance; Red, White & Royal Blue) and Amber Ruffin (“Late Night with Seth Meyers,” “Drunk History”), the appeal was in taking the beloved film apart and building it back for new audiences.
“We kept asking ourselves, ‘what would this band look like if we were in it?’ And ‘how would the story go if two knuckleheads like us were a part of it?’ And the work flowed from there,” they shared. “Most importantly, we were excited at being given a chance to write a show in which everyone felt welcome at the party, because we were being asked to help throw it. The love that flows from the stage to the audience and then back every night came from the love we came to feel for these characters.”
Rounding out the creative team, Some Like it Hot features music by Marc Shaiman (Hairspray), lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman, and direction and choreography by Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon, Disney’s Aladdin, Mean Girls).
The show opened at the Shubert Theatre in December 2022 and was nominated for 13 Tony Awards® including best musical. At the 76th Tony Awards, Some Like it Hot won four awards including best choreography. The musical also earned eight Drama Desk Awards and won a Grammy Award® for best musical theater album.
Some Like it Hot also won a Tony Award for best costume design. Gregg Barnes, the costume designer, was deeply inspired by “the creative vision of artists working almost 100 years ago,” he shared. “Some Like It Hot is the kind of project I love to design. It has everything! The costume demands include so many walks of life: Chicago gangsters, speakeasy patrons, jazz bands, an eccentric millionaire and even a quick trip south of the border—these are folks with a dream, running away from (or towards) a new destiny." In the scenes set in Chicago, Barnes plays with art deco, funky florals and off-center geometrics, meanwhile the costumes in California feature subtle shades of muted blues and elegant greens, conjuring feelings of the beach.
