Collaborating with the playwright was invaluable because he provided the foundation, allowing me to ask, ‘What were you thinking when you wrote this?’ Initially, he wrote from a young perspective, similar to Kimberly’s. But when we revisited the material, we approached it from the vantage point of parents and middle-aged individuals. This evolution in perspective was fascinating. Celebrating Women's History Month at Walton Arts Center

Women’s History Month is a time to honor and celebrate the incredible contributions of women to our society. At Walton Arts Center, we’re proud to highlight the powerful voices and stories of women through the arts. This month, we’re featuring two exceptional shows that showcase the talent and creativity of women. Join us as we celebrate their impact and continue to uplift women’s voices on stage and beyond. 

First up in March are two sisters whose musical maturity and emotional intelligence far surpass their age. Taking the stage on Friday, March 7, The Burney Sisters, comprised of sisters Emma and Bella Burney, write keen and knowing songs while arranging for multiple instruments and structuring unique and resonant harmonies.  The result: personal and penetrating music that both connects with and captivates their listener. Their soul nurturing sibling harmonies and tunes are reminiscent of The Avett Brothers, First Aid Kit, Lake Street Dive, The Staves and Joseph. Cabaret tickets are $55 and tiered seating tickets are $35. 

Continue your Women’s History Month celebrations with a classic musical that you know and love that celebrates a real-life successful woman. The sensational musical comedy revival, Funny Girl, will be at Walton Arts Center for eight performances March 18-23. This bittersweet comedy is the story of the indomitable Fanny Brice. As a girl from the Lower East Side who dreamed of a life on the stage, everyone told her she’d never be a star, but then something funny happened—she became one of the most beloved performers in history, shining brighter than the brightest lights of Broadway. The sensational Broadway revival dazzles with celebrated classic songs, including “Don’t Rain On My Parade,” “I’m the Greatest Star,” and “People.”  

Fania Borach, professionally know as Fanny Brice, was an American comedian who built her career on a Yiddish accent. She also was a model, singer and actress who made a variety of stage, radio and film appearances and was the star of the radio comedy series, “The Baby Snooks Show.” Thirteen years after her death, Brice was portrayed on the Broadway stage by Barbra Streisand in Funny Girl and that marked the beginning of a sensational Broadway musical.  Tickets are $56 to $109.

Mark your calendar now for Paige Hernandez, another talented female artist who is bringing Havana Hop to our stage on Monday, May 12. In this dynamic, multi-cultural show, the audience gets to dance along as one actress portrays three generations of lively women and infuses a salsa-style flair into hip-hop. This multi-cultural experience is written, choreographed and performed by Hernandez. Young Yeila dreams of being a superstar, but her lack of confidence gives her awful stage fright. With advice from her mother and mentors, Yeila begins to find her Cuban roots and build confidence.

The Temptations are known for their soulful music, but do you know their inspiring story? Explore the story behind the music when Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of the Temptations comes to Walton Arts Center Jan. 22-23 with three performances.

Set to the sound of the n’goni, balafon, djembe, naffar, derbouka and dhol instruments, this dynamic concert invites kids and their families to discover Africa, the Middle East and India through rhythm, song and dance. From African rap and desert dance to Sufi rhythm and Bollywood dance, award-winning artist and percussionist Kattam takes you on an entertaining and educational journey on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 4 pm. Helen Hong is a beloved comedian and actor who is bringing the laughs to Walton Arts Center on Thursday, Jan. 30 at 7:30 pm.  Her sharp wit and pulse on current events have regularly landed her on CNN, The Young Turks and “The Stephanie Miller Show.” She’s performed standup comedy on “The Arsenio Hall Show,” “Last Call with Carson Daly,” “Comics Unleashed with Byron Allen,” Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal and for troops in the middle east and international audiences all over the world. Sensory Friendly Performance Makes Theater Accessible To All!

This season, Walton Arts Center is offering a sensory-friendly or non-shushing performance of Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas The Musical!, to make theater more welcoming and inclusive for all.  

The Thursday Matinee on Nov. 14 at 1:30 pm will be subtly adapted for adults and children with sensory-input issues, autism or other developmental or cognitive disability, as well as anyone who might feel uncomfortable attending a typical live theater performance. 

All patrons are welcome at this performance, but to make the show more accessible to all the following adjustments will be made:  

  • Sound in the production will be lowered, particularly for loud or startling sounds.   

  • Lights in the seating area will be dimmed rather than fully dark during the performance.   

  • Patrons are allowed to speak and vocalize as they wish, as well as leave and re-enter the seating area as needed.   

  • The use of mobile electronic devices is allowed during the performance if they are being used as a communication device. Photography or recording will still not be permitted.   

  • Outside the theater, an activity area will be available with a live video feed of the show for patrons who may need a break. A calming corner with fidget toys and bean-bag chairs will also be available for those who need a quiet place to relax.   

  • Audience members are welcome to bring any necessary food, drinks or hand fidgets into the theater.   

  • A family restroom (gender-neutral) will be available for use.   

This production is the perfect opportunity to introduce theater to the young and young at heart through fun music and a classic story. 

Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical features the hit songs "You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch" and "Welcome Christmas” (written by Albert Hague and Dr. Seuss) from the original animated series. Max the Dog narrates while the mean and scheming Grinch, whose heart is "two sizes too small," decides to steal Christmas away from the holiday-loving Whos. Magnificent sets (John Lee Beatty) and costumes (Robert Morgan) inspired by Dr. Seuss’ original illustrations help transport audiences to the whimsical world of Whoville, while the music and book of Mel Marvin and Timothy Mason breathe new life into this timeless story of the true meaning of Christmas. The 2024 production is directed by Matt August and choreographed by Bob Richard based on the original choreography by John DeLuca and originally created by three-time Tony Award® winning director, Jack O’Brien.

What is Better Than a Hamilton History Lesson?

As the president of the Museum of American Finance, David Cowen is an expert on the American financial system - the same financial system created by Alexander Hamilton. A portrait of Hamilton hangs above the desk in Cowen’s office. The Hamilton crew asked Cowen what some of the lyrics meant and what traces of Hamilton’s financial legally are still alive today, read below to see what Cowen had to say! 

 “Legacy. What is a legacy?” 

Cowen: “The entire financial system is [Hamilton’s] legacy! He set up the system that we live under. Finance is the horse to the economy’s cart and, not only did it not exist when he came here, but we had all the leftover debt and problems from the revolutionary war; he inherited a very messy situation. He comes into office September 11, 1789, and he leaves at the end of January 1795. He achieved a lot during those six short years in office. His greatest legacy is what he accomplished as our nation’s first treasury secretary.” 

“He took our country from bankruptcy to prosperity. I hate to admit it, but he doesn’t get enough credit for the credit he gave us.”  

Cowen: “Before he gets into office, our [nation] is effectively bankrupt. There is all this leftover debt that the continental Congress raised during the war. Coupled with [that] domestic debt, there’s also state debts; some states were paying the debt off, some were not. Then, there’s also international debt. We had borrowed money from the French who were helping us both militarily and economically.” 

“Hamilton said, we should honor all that debt. Why is that amazing? It gives us great credit. We honor the debt, and people now are willing to loan to us. So, in a dozen years when we go to Napoleon and say we want to buy New Orleans, we go to the premier bankers of the day in London, we borrow the money to pay Napoleon, and double the size of our country because we have good credit.” 

“If New York is in debt, why should Virginia bear it?” 

Cowen: “Virginia didn’t have a lot of debt so they wanted to know why they should be paying for Massachusetts. We weren’t really unified as a country, so the Virginians were blocking [Hamilton’s plan]. So then, in my opinion, the most famous trade in American history, was in “the room where it happens,” that meeting between Jefferson and Madison and Hamilton whereby they trade the capital. There are stories that Jefferson said, ‘I’m never trading with Hamilton again because I got hoodwinked into this.’” 

“The issue on the table: Secretary Hamilton’s plan to assume state debt and establish a national bank.” 

Cowen: “Hamilton establishes a quasi-central bank. It was called The Bank of the United States and it had branches. It was 80% private money and 20% government money. How was Hamilton going to pay a judge in South Carolina? Well, he has a branch of the bank there so instead of having to send the money by horse, he can just make a book entry to pay that judge. It makes the ease and process so much better. It’s also where people put their money in, and it can be lent out. This was created by him and passed by Congress and is the only national bank. By the time he leaves office in ‘95, there is a bank that has five branches.”

Cowen: “When Hamilton takes office, we’re using foreign currency. Hamilton decides we're going to have our own [national currency]. We’re not going to rely on foreign currencies (which do stay in circulation for years), but we’re going to set our own U.S. dollar and have our own currency.”

Peter Pan Tickets On Sale Now: A Neverland for Today

Peter Pan, the high-flying musical, has been thrilling audiences of all ages for close to 70 years and is now a newly-imagined production directed by Emmy Award® winner Lonny Price (Sunset Boulevard, Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill) with the book by celebrated playwright Larissa FastHorse (The Thanksgiving Play, What Would Crazy Horse Do?) and choreography by Lorin Latarro (Waitress, The Who’s Tommy). Peter Pan will bring the magic to a whole new generation Sept. 24 –29. Tickets are on sale now.

The adventure begins when Peter Pan  and his mischievous sidekick, Tinker Bell, visit the bedroom of the Darling children late one night. With a sprinkle of fairy dust and a few happy thoughts, the children are taken on a magical journey they will never forget. This extraordinary musical is full of excitement and adventure and features iconic and timeless songs including “I'm Flying,” “I Gotta Crow,” “I Won't Grow Up” and “Neverland.” Peter Pan  embraces the child in us all so go on a journey from the second star to the right and straight on ‘til morning - your entire family will be Hooked!   

When adapting Peter Pan, FastHorse explained that her job was to refresh the story rather than reimagine it. It was very important to FastHorse that any child coming to the show could imagine Peter Pan flying outside their window.  

Additionally, FastHorse took the tribe of children and adapted it in the new production so that each person in the tribe is the last member of an extinct culture. FastHorse explained it is because you never grow old in Neverland, these members come to Neverland to preserve their cultures until they can find a way back to the normal world.

Seventeen-year-old Nolan Almeida will play the iconic role of Peter Pan. An Orange County, California native, Nolan was most recently seen as Crutchie in Newsies at 5-Star Theatricals and was featured in Christmas on Repeat on Hulu.  

“Nolan embodies all the beautiful contradictions of Peter,” said Price. “He’s an extraordinarily gifted young actor, a wonderful singer and nothing short of magical.”  

Joining him will be Cody Garcia as Captain Hook who most recently starred as Willy Wonka in the national tour of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory that played here in 2021 and as Buddy in Elf. Emerson College graduate Hawa Kamara as Wendy and acclaimed recording artist Raye Zaragoza as Tiger Lily.

Music is by songwriting superstars Shane McAnally and Brandy Clark and they just make you happy. This is a musical both for people who aren't sure that they like musicals and for those of us who love them! Do not sleep on this one. You'll be disappointed if you do!”
