Escape the Ordinary with Terrapin Puppet Theatre: The Paper Escaper

Benny, the plucky puppet protagonist in The Paper Escaper, knows they are destined for greater things than a simple pop-up book. But in a world that’s trying to squash Benny between its pages – from a wily dancing fire to a disillusioned illustrator – Benny will need the help of a new friend to achieve their dreams. Don’t miss your chance to see Benny’s journey on Thursday, April 24 at 6 pm.

This bright puppetry work from Terrapin tells a story of determination, friendship and the power of following your own path. The non-verbal storytelling is suited to audiences diverse in age, language and background. Remount director of The Paper Escaper, Davina Wright, told The Mercury that the production combines “fantastical elements” with a storyline everyone can enjoy. “It’s a beautiful story about courage and a child finding their own way in the world outside of their normal day to day life.”

Terrapin Puppet Theatre puts what matters most in motion. Their purpose is to make lives better, shift realities and create connections and they have been doing it for over 40 years. Terrapin brings contemporary artists and audiences together with one of the oldest artforms in the world, puppetry.

Writer of The Paper Escaper, Gita Bezard, told ArtsHub that when writing for puppets in a visual world, “it is all action.” “There are no lengthy monologues to explain how the characters feel. We have to see it. They always have to be doing something and pushing the story ahead. Writing for puppetry means there is a greater collaboration between the writer, the design team and the director. There is so much room for all the elements within the story and everyone gets to put their own beautiful, creative flavor into the story.”

Working with writers, designers, performers, composers, inventors, game-makers and other artists, Terrapin forms and re-forms creative teams in new ways for new art projects. With an in-house workshop where technical knowledge and artistry are combined, character design, world building and deep storytelling is born. Terrapin’s skilled network of makers work sustainably to build anything from shadow puppets to southern right whales to tiny, shimmering birds.

Director Rose Myers Gives Us An Inside Look at Bluey's Big Play

Bluey’s Big Play, presented as part of the Pringles Kids Series, takes the stage at Walton Arts Center Sept. 6-8 for four performances! It’s the perfect show to introduce your children to the world of theatre. Read more about what Bluey’s Big Play director, Rose Myers, has to say about the show.

“There were lots of challenges working out how to realize an animation as a live show,” Myers explained when asked what it was like to direct the performance. “All the artists and producers that worked on the production recognize the level of artistry in the animation and the phenomenal caliber of Joe Brumm’s story telling.”

Myers explained that their goal was to honor Brumm’s talents, so they opted for a live show using puppetry to execute the story-telling elements. The team uses large puppets for the characters, so naturally they employed a puppetry director, Jacob Williams, to help the puppets come to life.

“I am driven to make stories come to life. I love the theatre as a place of communal experience and a place where we can unpack and celebrate the human experience,” explained Myers when asked what motivates him.

Myers further emphasized the importance of young audiences in theater, saying that she loves a younger audience because of their naturally imaginative minds. “Also, the communal nature of theater is wonderful,” stressed Myers, “theater and imagination are very fundamental to our health as humans.”

Bluey is a celebration of family and play, those fundamental things about life that we sometimes take for granted,” Myers explained when asked what people should know about Bluey’s Big Play. “The show is lots of fun for the whole family and a magical experience to share with the little people in your life.”

Grab tickets while they last for this family fun-filled show, tickets start at $29 and are available now at waltonartscenter.org, by calling 479.443.5600 weekdays 10 am until 5 pm or in-person at the Walton Arts Center Box Office weekdays 10 am until 2 pm.

All patrons are welcome at these special performances, however in order to make the shows more accessible to all individuals and their families, we will make adjustments to these productions in some or all of the following ways:

  • Sound in the production will be lowered, particularly for loud or startling sounds.

  • Lights in the seating area will be dimmed rather than fully dark during the performance.

  • Patrons are allowed to speak and vocalize as they wish, as well as leave and re-enter the seating area as needed.

  • The use of mobile electronic devices are allowed during the performance if they are being used as a communication device. Photography or recording will still not be permitted.

  • Outside the theater, an activity area will be available with a live video feed of the show for patrons who may need a break. A calming corner with fidget toys and bean-bag chairs will also be available for those who need a quiet place to relax.

  • Audience members are welcome to bring any necessary food, drinks or hand fidgets into the theater.

  • A family restroom (gender-neutral) will be available for use.

Both productions are fun opportunities to introduce theater to the young and young at heart through technology and captivating storytelling.

In BRUSH Theatre’s Poli POP!, Poli and Pola don’t want to go to sleep. The siblings start off playing with toys in their bedroom, but then their imagination takes them on a surreal dreamlike journey full of surprise and joy. BRUSH Theatre uses incredible technology and special effects to transform the set from an empty room to distant islands, roaring seas, the Egyptian desert, busy cities, dance parties and more!  But the duo doesn’t know there’s something else lurking in the shadows…a ferocious alien monster. What will they do? Join us on Tuesday, Feb. 13 at 7 pm to find out, tickets are only $10!

tutti frutti’s The Boy Who Cried Wolf, is inspired by Aesop’s famous fable, this is a beautifully crafted production about a boy who learns that “nobody believes a liar, even when they’re telling the truth.” Watch a gifted ensemble of actor/musicians play and sing live on stage, embodying all the delightful characters — hilarious sheep, a scary wolf or two and a village of knitters with fingers flicking and needles clicking. Enjoy this classic story in a sensory-friendly setting on Tuesday, March 5 at 7 pm, tickets are only $10!

Q&A with the Producers of Madagascar The Musical

Don’t miss Alex, Marty, Melman and Gloria as they bound out of the zoo and onto Walton Arts Center’s stage in a musical adaptation of the animated movie, Madagascar. This brand-new musical from Dreamworks will leave audiences with no choice but to “Move It, Move It!”

Ahead of the performances June 2-3, we sat down with the producers and found out what makes this show so special.

What are the challenges you faced adapting this animated movie into a musical theater production?

When you have a film franchise as popular as Madagascar, the challenge becomes knowing which parts of the story to tell while giving audiences what they expect to see. As we bring these beloved characters to life, I believe we have found the right balance of heart and humor that won’t disappoint and will be fun for the whole family.

Why do you think Madagascar lends itself to being a musical theater adaptation?

It was a no-brainer. The larger-than-life characters and the colorful backdrop from the film made the leap to stage an easy one. The fun part is figuring out how to bring the animated world to life through scenic elements and using stage craft to enhance the story. We must give credit to Kevin Del Aguila for his great work with the book and our composers Joel Somellian and George Noriega. These elements really propel the story and make it feel like a party.

What are the biggest differences between the film and the theater production and can you explain what led to these choices?

The biggest difference is the new music and the focus on pivotal moments from the original story. Film allows you to cover more time and space in the storytelling, but in theater you have to focus on important moments. The use of original songs in these moments enriches the story.

Is this a show for kids or for the whole family?

This is for the whole family. It is visually stimulating and very funny. It will keep everyone entertained and having a good time. I mean the penguins alone … come on!

How can this show get younger audiences interested in theater and Broadway?

Live theater is a magical experience. Seeing a show like this come together with the lights, sets and music will give a joyful, positive message will always inspire future storytellers and supporters of the arts.

What about the story of Madagascar makes it so beloved worldwide and what is exciting about this new adaptation?

I think the story resonates with people of all ages. We all get restless and want to find where we belong, but we can’t do it alone. It’s a simple story of adventure and community wrapped in a party. And you watch it come to life right before your eyes. What’s not to love?

Staff Recommendations: Shows for Families with Kids of All Ages

Sometimes when you look at the season listing for Walton Arts Center, it can be a bit overwhelming. There are so many shows, and they all look so good. We can help!

We’ve asked some of Walton Arts Center’s staff (the people in the know) to recommend their favorite shows or some of the performances they are most excited about in the new season. Here’s part 1 with recommendations for shows families with kids of all ages.

Shows for Families with Older Kids

Recommended for ages 10+

I am excited to bring my family to see Spamilton: An American Parody! It combines two of our favorite things: musical theater and comedy. Since we just saw Hamilton this past year, it’s the perfect follow-up show! But it’s not just for Hamilton fans - it’s full of Broadway references, parody songs and jokes. If you have teens and tweens who love theater and laughing, don’t miss this show.

I am looking forward to taking my boys to see The New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players’ The Pirates of Penzance. This show is a can’t-miss classic for kids because it’s hilarious and includes lots of impressive songs with fast vocals, like “Modern Major General,” that they will appreciate. Plus, there are beautiful operatic moments. It just has it all! The movie version starring Kevin Kline Linda Ronstadt was one of my all-time favorites growing, up so this is a nostalgic one for me.

The 10x10 Arts Series is a no-brainer for families because of the programming diversity and the price. For only $10 a ticket, you can expose your children to the classics, like The Pirates of Penzance, and also see concerts from a variety of genres and cultures (see: Aida Cuevas, LADAMA and Duwende) and cool modern performances like Visceral Dance Chicago - all in a single series.

Shows for Families with Younger Kids

I'm looking forward to the Kellogg’s Kids Series shows because my kids will love them all, particularly Bluey’s Big Play, coming Dec. 20-21! We watch “Bluey” everyday on TV, and to see the characters live will light up their little faces. I can count on Bluey to show my kids creative play using imagination, how to deal with some big feelings and family fun.

I’m very excited for Winnie The Pooh! I missed the show when it opened off-Broadway last year, but I am thrilled it’s touring the country. Those characters are ingrained in my childhood, and I can’t wait for my 2 year old to see it as his first live theatrical production. To see him connect with those characters who meant so much to me as a child (especially Tigger!) will be the ultimate reward. The puppetry looks terrific, and the storytelling will no doubt be wonderful. Adults will be able to rekindle their relationships with Pooh, Tigger, Rabbit and Eeyore, and kids will form new connections. For these to be live characters, as opposed to cartoons on a screen, is just the honey on top!
