From Chicago to the world, Mariachi Herencia de México: A Mariachi Christmas brings the sound of Mexico to Baum Walker Hall for just one performance Thursday, Dec. 3 at 7 pm. The two-time Latin Grammy®-nominated, 14-member ensemble is redefining the genre for a new bicultural generation with six chart-topping albums and millions of streams worldwide.
The historic tradition of mariachi music has its roots of origin in cities like Guadalajara and Mexico City. As the genre's influence spread, it reached Chicago where it birthed Mariachi Herencia de México. Just recently the ensemble made history as the first mariachi band to be invited to perform the national anthem in the Chicago Bear's 107-year history.
Nuestra Herencia, their 2017 debut album, topped the Latin streaming charts and earned the band their first Latin Grammy-nomination for best ranchero/mariachi album. In 2022, their album Herederos came as the band was performing an extremely successful North American tour and went on to receive the group's other Latin Grammy nomination. In 2025, they released their groundbreaking album Viva La Música, amassing millions of views and streams worldwide.
"Some albums arrive like declarations and Viva La Música is one of them," writes Ladygunn Magazine. "The album is an expansive, genre-bending offering from Mariachi Herencia de México and feels less like a departure and more like a deepening. Raised in Chicago, shaped by Mexican tradition and fluent in the musical dialects of salsa, jazz, bolero and soul, the band channels a bicultural reality that's as intuitive as it is intentional."
